History
It takes its name from a beach and an iron mine near Santiago de Cuba. The most widely accepted version attributes its creation to the American mining engineer Jennings Cox, who was in Cuba at the time of the Spanish-American War of 1898. In 1909 Admiral Lucius W. Johnson took the recipe to the Army and Navy Club in Washington, and in Havana the drink was refined by Constantino Ribalaigua Vert.
