History
Its origin is disputed: one version attributes the drink to Jerry Thomas, at the Occidental Hotel, and another to a bartender named Richelieu, in the city of Martinez, California, and the records from the period are incomplete. The first mention in print is from 1884, in O. H. Byron's guide, which describes it as a Manhattan with gin in place of the whiskey. In 1887, Jerry Thomas's guide carried the recipe with Old Tom gin, vermouth, maraschino and bitters.
