History
A Cuban drink from the time of the wars of independence against Spain: the mambises, the pro-independence fighters, mixed aguardiente with honey and whatever citrus they had on hand and drank the mixture hot, served in a jícara (a gourd cup). It is usually associated with the city of Trinidad, of which it has become a symbol, although its origin is attributed to the east of the island. The version with ice and fixed measures is an adaptation made in the 1980s.
