History
It appeared in the late 1920s, near the end of Prohibition in the United States, but with a different recipe: it called for gin and grenadine. The current version, with vodka, cranberry and grapefruit, came after the growers' cooperative that gave rise to Ocean Spray began promoting cranberry juice as a mixer, and it only really caught on in the 1970s.
