Method
Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with ice cubes and stir well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

History
The most often told story says it was born at the Manhattan Club in New York in the mid-1870s, at a banquet hosted by Jennie Jerome, Winston Churchill's mother. That is probably a legend, since she was in France and pregnant at the time. The earliest known printed recipes are from 1884, and another account attributes its creation to a bartender named Black, at a bar on Broadway, in the 1860s.
