History
Victor Bergeron, known as Trader Vic, claimed to have created the drink in 1944 at his restaurant in Oakland, California. Donn Beach, of Don the Beachcomber, claimed a 1933 creation, although a longtime colleague said that he claimed only that the Mai Tai was based on his Q.B. Cooler. The name comes from the Tahitian maita'i, which means good or excellent.
